Born in a village in Dindori district of eastern Madhya Pradesh in the gond tribe. She started making dignas at the age of six-using different kinds of clay to draw colourful patterns on walls during festivals and weddings. She has done art work for several books, primarily for children. The Night Life of Trees, coauthored by her, won the BolognaRagazzi Award in 2008. She has handled a wide range of themes-from our Gond gods to the horror of the Bhopal gas leak. she has enjoyed drawing Ambedkar's life along with her husband Subhash. While doing the book she once told Anand, this is like the Ramayana! He said,'No, this is Bhimayana'-and that's how they hit upon this title. The most striking feature of Durga Bai’s paintings is their ability to tell a story. Her forms are mostly drawn from the pantheon of the Gond Pardhan community. Durga Bai also enjoys painting folktales. For this she is grateful to her grandmother who told her lots of stories. Durga Bai’s work is rooted in her birthplace, Burbaspur, a village in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. more>>
